I am trying to make a connection and the following message
appears on my screen: "There is no dial tone".
This means that your modem can't see an active telephone
line. The most obvious cause is that you may have forgotten
to plug your telephone line into your modem. If this is the
case, then plug it in and try again. Otherwise, the
telephone cable itself may be damaged. To test the cable,
connect it on another working modem, if it is available, and
try to connect to CYTANET. It is also a good idea to check
the phone line itself. Place an ordinary telephone device in
the socket and make an ordinary call. If it doesn't work,
call 197 and report the fault.
A common mistake is
plugging your telephone line into the wrong jack on your
modem. Many modems have two jacks, one for the telephone
line and one for a telephone handset.
Another common
problem occurs when some other device that is connected on
the same telephone line (e.g. a telephone answering mashine)
is off-hook.
